We at TGO Consulting help our clients in defining the best strategy making the right decisions. We know the opportunities and pitfalls associated with lateral hires [read our blog post ] and we know the gains an losses that comes with mergers. We help our clients with post hire/merger integration, immediately creating extra value for the firm. We provide a service doing due-diligence on the book of business of the new partner(s). This service is extremely discrete and has proven to reduce the risk of a disappointing revenue later on. TGO Consulting will help you assess more accurately what clients and how much business the new team/partner will bring. The legal market has become a global market. Clients have ventured all over the world and often they want their trusted law firm to follow. For decades law firms have been following their clients when they started doing business abroad. Some of these international offices have been profitable, but unfortunately the majority has not. Partners and lawyers on expat allowances turn out to be costly, while the opportunities to generate local business are limited. TGO Consulting assists law firms in remaining entrepreneurial, while avoiding the financial pitfalls at the same time. There is a clear tendency towards consolidation in today's legal market. Substantial investments will be needed to keep up with technological evolution. These investments and the investment needed to attract talented lateral hires are in many cases beyond the scope of an individual law firm. In these situations a merger could make sense. TGO Consulting guides law firms through the perilous process of finding the right match, doing the due diligence, the process of decision making and the subsequent integration after the merger. ask more info

  • Death of a Law Firm | TGO Consulting

"Some law firms might be only steps away from collapse and still they are totally unaware." published by the American Bar Association "Death of a Law Firm is full of important insights about major law firms today: their strengths, weaknesses, and eccentricities. The author knows this world in complete detail and pulls no punches in his analysis of critical business and organizational issues. This is a book not to be missed." - James R. Silkenat, former President of the American Bar Association "Jaap presents precious and thought-provoking ideas in an engaging and entertaining style, giving valuable insight into how law firms operate and what threats they face. Though you may agree or disagree with his sometimes provocative and rebellious opinions, the book is surely an intriguing must-read for all lawyers who take themselves and their future seriously!" - Dr. Orsolya Görgényi, LL.M., former President of the AIJA "Death of a Law Firm is a fascinating read that challenges the status quo and taps into our senses, showing how to increase your probabilities of success. Each chapter is a constant challenge to the traditional approach - providing many 'aha!' moments." - Vincent J. Cordo, Central Legal Operations Manger, Shell ‘Nothing fails like success’. Business law firms have what is arguably one of the most profitable business models in existence. Profits have soared over the last decades and many partners make well over a million dollar a year. Even the 2008 financial crisis has not been able to change that. Lawyers can be forgiven for being convinced they are doing something right. Death of a Law Firm , is a provoking book that carefully dissects the business model against the changes that are going on in the market. The book demonstrates that increasing commoditization, increasing partner mobility and the way partners work together and take decisions, create a toxic mix that might become lethal. The combination of hard core economics and behavioural insights that make this book unique and powerful. A must read, not only for partners wishing to steer their firm clear of the abyss, but also for anyone working in the business of law, including associates and staff, or even for law students aspiring a career. To buy a copy please go to ABA bookshop or to Amazon.com To find out more about the book, please visit www.deathofalawfirm.com . The book has been translated into Chinese and published in 2017 by Law Press China: 中法图正版 律所再造:律所革命的宣言书 The Chinese edition is available here .

  • Partner Performance & Compensation | TGO Consulting

Partner compensation and partner performance measurement The way in which profit is distributed and the Key Performance Indicators for partners, will drive behavior. TGO Consulting will help define effective KPI's for partners and associates that will incentify behavior that will make the firm as a whole more profitable and will help create strong and deep client relationships. TGO Consulting has extensive experience in partner compensation models and we have developed balanced systems of performance monitoring that help stimulate behavior that is in the best interest of both the firm and the individual partner. We also have a wealth of best practices when it comes to partners reaching the ‘retirement’ age and on how to reduce the risks connected to lateral hires. In every partnership here is a natural tension between successful high earning performers and those who are trailing behind. The profit distribution systems are found to amplify or moderate these dynamics. With few exceptions, distributions and compensation systems are paired with some form of measuring of the performance of individual partners. Law firms often do not realize the influence these parameters have on the behavior of partners and on the performance of the firm as a whole. Contact us and find out how we could help your firm to become more profitable and aligned.

  • about us | tgo consulting

about us The world is awash with consultants that share wisdom from the past. Some of them even once had impressive careers as managing partners. Others have gathered wisdom without ever having been in 'the trenches'. We at TGO Consulting believe that the strategies that have worked well in the past are not necessary what is best for tomorrow. If you do what you did, you get what you've got. In order to navigate the future, fresh, critical and independent thinking is needed. No recycling of old tricks and no parroting other people. We at TGO Consulting will always keep thinking independent, critical and out-of-the-box. We have an unrivalled ability to innovate. "if you do what you did - you get what you got" The TGO Value Matrix© shows that ‘value’ is related to the Return On Investment for the client (to what extend the investment in legal fees contribute to bottom-line profit) and the level of Commoditization (the number of experienced lawyers, qualified for the matter). There has never been a linear relation between time and value. We invented the Creation-Production-Divide Concept©, a revolutionary new way to explain in what part of the process lays the value to your clients. This insight is widely considered a gamechanger in the industry. Succession remains a sensitive and complex topic. The TGO power curve© analysis immediately shows succession and leadership vulnerabilities in the firm. This is just one of our data based models in use. We have developed the TGO Sustainability Scan©, precisely tailored to the legal profession. Our sustainability practice is headed by Mansi Jasuja who is an internationally renowned expert on Sustainability and Diversity. “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower” - Steve Jobs - founders TGO Consulting was founded by Jaap Bosman and Lisa Håkanson, two lawyers with over a decade of experience. Besides a legal degree, Jaap also holds a degree from one of the world’s most prestigious design schools. This defines our dna. The unique combination of legal experience and knowledge and creativity gives TGO Consulting a competitive edge and is reflected in our vision and approach. Jaap Bosman Lisa Håkanson Read More our social responsibility At TGO Consulting we are committed to making a difference in society. This commitment is deeply embedded in everything we do. Integrity, decency and sustainability are three of the fundamental pillars on which we build our business. We will always strive to do the right thing as it comes to people and planet. In doing so we have pledged to reduce our carbon footprint by 33% over the next 3 years. This will mean less travel and if we travel we will offset the carbon emissions created. It also means that we will preferably only buy sustainable materials and equipment. We will use all our stuff as long as possible and make sure it is properly recycled when it finally reaches the end of its lifecycle. supporting culture We are members of ‘Die Gesellschaft der Freunde von Bayreuth’ (Society of Friends of Bayreuth). The Bayreuth Festival is one of the most prestigious musical events in the world. The passion and fervor it instils, year after year, makes it absolutely unique. The festival is held in August. • Revenue Management | TGO Consulting

Revenue management for law firms The vast majority of lawyers does not manage to consistently write 8 billable hours a day. Utilization, billable time as a percentage of the target, is typically at 90% or below. In almost every law firm we know there is time that is currently not used to work on client matters. What if we could help you monetize these idle hours? That would instantly create a significant boost in your profit. We help lawyers focusing on revenue management rather than on the hourly rate. Start applying market dynamics in the way Uber does. Or the airline industry, they are also willing to sell you the last remaining business class seat at a discounted price. Also for them selling that seat will bring pure profit as there will be no additional costs. Airline passengers have got used to this and have learned to accept that the person sitting next to them might have a better deal. [read our blog post ] Today we are working with our clients to introduce smarter and more sophisticated pricing models. These models introduce flexible pricing in order to better manage revenue and enhance profitability. Also for the law firm’s clients this provides new opportunities as they will have a better deal at times of low demand. Talking to the in-house lawyers we know they are ready to embrace this model. No reason for your firm to hesitate. Find how we can help your firm implement revenue management.

  • Digital Transformation | TGO Consulting

Digital transformation Artificial intelligence is like teenage sex: “Everyone talks about it, nobody really knows how to do it, everyone thinks everyone else is doing it, so everyone claims they are doing it.” (Dan Ariely) This holds certainly true for the legal world. Today the majority of business law firms claims to use artificial intelligence... TGO Consulting helps its clients to set specific and realistic automation goals and make smart choices focusing on maximum return on time and capital spend, taking into account the learning curve needed for lawyers in order to use the new tools. We are not IT sales people. We help distinguish between what is hype and what will benefit lawyers in the real world. We focus on business opportunities for our clients embracing technology in a new and smart way. Technology seen as a business Q3 2017 we have made an inventory of LegalTech and identified some 1700 tech companies and initiatives offering services for the legal sector. Total investment in the sector mounted to 2.2 billion. Significantly up from the 550 million in 2015. About 60% of all investment has gone into software for e-discovery, IP-management and contract management, software predominantly used by clients. Most legal tech companies are not profitable and are still heavily reliant on Venture Capital. It is hard to predict what percentage of the 1700 tech companies will still be around by 2025. AI will probably not replace lawyers in the foreseeable future and being a great lawyer will increasingly come down to human skills. Lawyers will lose the monopoly on legal knowledge. AI and other IT solutions will augment lawyers and make them more efficient. Lawyers will have to learn how to use the new software tools and the learning curve could well be steep and time consuming. Not every lawyer will be prepared to invest the time and effort required. Certainly something to keep in mind before investing. AI is only as good as the data it receives. And it is able to interpret that data only within the narrow confines of the supplied context. It doesn’t “understand” what it has analyzed, so it is unable to apply its analysis to scenarios in other contexts. And it can’t distinguish causation from correlation. AI is more like an Excel spreadsheet on steroids than a thinker. Contact us to discuss your situation and let us help find our where to invest.

  • Process re-engineering | TGO Consulting

Process deconstruction & re-engineering TGO Consulting helps law firms with proper analysis and fundamental process deconstruction and re-engineering. Business process re-engineering (BPR) is a business management strategy, originally pioneered in the early 1990s, focusing on the analysis and design of workflows and business processes within an organization. BPR aims to help organizations fundamentally rethink how they do their work in order to dramatically improve customer service, cut operational costs. In the future the discussion will no longer be about the hourly rate, but about time spend. Clients will initiate a drive to dramatically improve the efficiency of the workflow and of how the work is done and at what level of seniority. This new reality will require a fundamentally new way of working for law firms. A new way of working that goes far beyond the implementation of 'project management'. It will require a complete overhaul of the traditional way of working and a completely new set of incentives and accounting tools. Today all but a few law firms experience pressure on price. Increasingly clients have demanded discounted rates or have negotiated Alternative Fee Arrangements. Ever since the financial crisis clients have put efforts to lowering their annual total legal spend. Up till very recently with limited success. Recently a new trend emerged with clients focusing on increasing the efficiency of the cooperation with external legal advisors. Data analytics are employed to create benchmark numbers and identify any inefficiency in the way matters are handled. Focusing equally on inefficiencies on the law firm side as well as on inefficiencies on the client side. Contact us and find out how TGO Consulting could help you.

  • Building strong brands in the legal market

Positioning & branding In times where competition in the market is fierce and, from a client’s perspective, law firms increasingly offer comparable quality of services, the way in which law firms position themselves becomes increasingly important. Smart positioning may help create a valuable competitive edge for your firm resulting in clients willing to pay a higher rate. Positioning is always based on strategy and it helps to differentiate your firm in a relevant manner from other quality law firms. Positioning is a complex process of carefully building a coherent, recognizable and relevant brand image over several years. Positioning is not the same as running an advertising campaign, launching a new website or a rebranding exercise. TGO Consulting has the strategic insights, expertise and market knowledge to help law firms build solid brands with credibility and relevance from clients’ perspective.
